Default YFZ450 and 450R Top Speed?

The June 1988 3&4 wheel action did radar tests with all the 2-stroke performance quads of the day. The 250's (250R, LT250 and Tecate) were between 72 mph and 74 mph. The Banshee was 77 mph and the LT500 was 79 mph. Please keep in mind these were stock machines.

I've checked my 250R just by driving beside a car and it agrees with these numbers (it is right around 73 mph).

Anyway, my question is has anyone checked the top speed of the new 450's? I noticed the last dirt wheels mentioned both top out at over 80 mph. This I find hard to believe.

I run alot of roads and a faster road speed would be nice.

Thanks in advance.

I have no personal experience, but I do believe that it really is something very, very close to 80, if not right on the money.

I have not clocked mine, but it is the only bike I have ridden that was fast enough to make the wind catch my helmet, and yank my head backward! That is faster than anybody needs to go.

I had mine on the sand drag strip at Florence. Now this strip is flat and hard packed wet sand and is about 4 miles long. I gave my son about a 100 yard head start on a piped and jetted 400EX. I pinned mine in 5th and laid forward on the tank and blew past him like he was standing still. It sure felt like I was doing about 80!

I've had my YFZ on GPS both in dirt and on tar.

My Garmin etrex read a best of:

74.9 mph on dirt road
77 mph on tar (bumping the rev limiter)

These speeds were with stock gearing and tires.

I doubt 80 mph is possible on the YFZ with stock tires and gearing since I was bumping
the rev limiter at 77 mph.

Hey, can I have a hit off the bong too???

One of my best friends owns a 450R with full exhaust, lid off and jetted and it isn't even a race for the YFZ with similar mods.
