Just curious of those who have had their o1' tranny fail.. What are the first signs?? Does it just completely go or are there any signs? What gears usually fail? Any precautions to take to prolong the tranny???

My 02 tranny failed catastrophically with no signs of trouble prior. 2nd gear split in two and took out 3-5th. I was doing about 20 mph and downshifted to make a turn and the gearbox locked up.
