What you always wanted to know about the Bayou 300 4X4 but were afraid to ask!
Bayou 300 4X4's sold in the US have no auxiliary oil coolers or external fans; however, the Kawasaki parts catalog at www.buykawasaki.com shows accessory oil coolers and plumbing; the price at dealers is around $ 500 or more; I believe Prairie 300's come with oil coolers.
Doug Blackburn installed a J.C. Whitney oil cooler on his Bayou 300 4X4 using fuel line, heavy-duty hose clamps, and nylon wire ties; a slick and effective arrangement (he mowed with a front-mount mower without overheating problems); I doubt the setup cost a tenth of the factory outfit's price.

I have owned both a 98 Lakota which I traded for a 2000 Bayou 300 4x4 both were great bikes never had a problem with either one. I traded for a Honda 450ES because I wanted something bigger but they dont make the 400 Bayou as a 2000 model and I didnt like the Prairies.

I own a '93 Bayou 300. It has been a pretty darn good machine. It gets rode hard and put away wet! I rebuilt it a few years ago as it lost a lot of compression and needed new clutches. I found that Kawasaki parts seem to be much more expensive than the competitors - like suzuki.
The rear drum brake only lasted a few years on mine. I replaced the seal ($72) and it didn't last another 1/2 season. Now I don't bother to fix it. Front brakes are great. Valves need adjustment about once per year. Now I need to get into the front gearcase as the seals etc are worn and let some water mix with the gear oil. As with any bike - you have to be willing to fix 'em or trade them in before they wear out.
