Default HONDA 250ex idle to WOT problems

Got my girl a new 2004 250ex. The only problem I'm having with it and maybe it's just common, is that when I hit the throttle full blast while idling it sputters and dies. It'll work fine if you gradually press the throttle at first then nail it. It also seems to idle a little low and the throttle has about a 1/2 inch play. Any adjustments I can make to fix this? I found the idle screw and it's hella hard to get to, I think I done burned my hands about 5 times trying to adjust it. lol It has about 3 hours on it right now.

Are you sure the choke isn't on?

The carb could be misadjusted. The mixture screw may be either too lean or too rich, and when it tries to do the transistion off idle to mid range it stumbles. Try running it with the choke on, and see if it improves.
A too low idle speed will cause a hesitation also.
Then if that doesnt help...try running a test run, with out the air box lid on.
If it runs better with the choke on....its too lean. If it runs better with the air box lid off, its too rich.
Its probably still under warentee, and im sure the dealer would fix it up for free.

Sounds good, thanks for the advice. Anyone know how to adjust the throttle cable. 1/2 inch to 1 inch play just seems too much. I'd rather it have no play at all.

There is a rubber boot on the cable at the throttle housing. Pull the boot back and there is an adjustment.

I have had this problem since new with my girls 2002 250EX. It will go away with the choke pulled up a tad. Nothing I have tryed will cure it. Only happens from dead idle and stabbing the throttle, so really isn't a big deal when riding. I've tryed mixture settings, pilot jets, etc. I don't think there is a cure short of an accelerator pump.

Im having the same problem with my 2003 250ex i dont know why it sputters it wasnt doing it a while ago it just started last week when my tank was almost empty i though maybe that was the problem but filled it up and it still sputters and dies when i give it full throttle.it really bothers me it even does it in first gear i have to give it a little gas so it wont die so i can completely gas it.

Most of these units mentioned sound like they have carb issues
I have had a few of the 250s that have had bad pulse generator and stator problems. A peak voltage test revealed the problem. I was banging my head after doing everything under the sun to cure carb issues on them and finding electrical issues
