Default 454 Left wheel and tire fell off

Anybody know what makes your whole left rear wheel assembly come off. 454 4x4 Bearcat. I came off and the wheel went down the mountain.

Mine has done this once as well but it didn't come completely off. The lower ball joint came out of the spindel and going down hill the top joint came out as well as the axel. Took $50 worth of ball joints and it was on the road again.

Actually the axle is still in the housing and after I looked at it yesterday it looks like the cotter pin came out and the wheel went bye-bye. I have a 2000 auto and it is nothing like the 96 454. 13000 miles on the 96 and it still is strong as new.

13000 miles, seems like it lasted a long time without a cotter pin. The seal and threads are extreemly worn after we took it apart. I think we can fix the threads with a heli-coil and find a bigger backing nut.
