Default What the.....sunk Grizz

My neighbor and I went out for a wheeler ride last night and it was a complete disaster. First of all, for those of you not around MN, we had a very nice/hot day yesterday and once it started to cool down around 8 PM we started out on the wheelers. We went all places we went last year and during the winter. I live in a developing area of new homes. It is in an old farm field surrounded by lakes and there are a ton of man made ponds scattered through out the area. These ponds will be surround by homes someday but for now they work great for a little 4x4 fun. We took to the pond that we had the most fun in last year. It was water from ankle deep all the way up to the top of the tires and some deep loon Sh*t bottom. Nothing to worry about since we crossed every inch of this thing last year. So, we started playing and before we got 10 mins into it we were crossing the narrowest part, me following my neighbors Grizz, when all of a sudden he went from 6 inches of water to, well, he was completly gone! All I saw was the Grizz disappear and my neighbor's head pop out of the water. He said that he couldn't touch bottom and then the Grizz reappeared by showing us only its 4 tires (she was floating upside down). We can't figure out what happened to our little pond other than the builders making it deeper this spring without us knowing (all of the other ponds are deeper than this one). So in other words what the.....

Now when it comes to getting the water out of the machine, what do you guys suggest? No kill switch was hit, so she sucked in a bunch of water. We pulled all the plugs/drains and drained the oil, but we have ever had to do this dewatering before. What do you guys suggest we do with a watered-down bear?

I would suggest flushing the cases with oil like usual until the oil doesn't come out water looking.Clean the carbs I heard some people run a little diesel fuel but dont quote me on that one. Keep flushin differentials with its fluid until that doesnt come out watery. just some suggestions...

Flush every fluid on the bike and make sure all metal parts are completly dry.

I did the same thing before with a Warrior...cept the warrior had an electrical problem and cut out when I was sidhilling and died. There was nothing I could do it just slid right into the pond. But it floated upside down too!! I guess thats one awesome design Yamaha does...quads that wont sink

I think my neighbor runs high pressure in his Grizz. I want to say there was 7 psi in the tires.

There is a lot to clean on a water logged Griz, but it is not hard work.

First off, purchase a service manual or service cd.

You will need to Clean and regrease the primary and secondary sheaves. Remove clutch covers two and three to remove water that is trapped. Remove both front and rear deck lids to clean out the sheave cooling ducts (intake & exhaust). Blow low pressure air through all breather tubes (after removing cap screws or caps to let the air have a place to go) a can of computer keyboard cleaner will work well and is not too high of a pressure. -----CAUTION-----If you use a pressure that is more than one of two pounds you might damage or push out seals, so use very low pressuer to blow the water from breather tubes. Remove and clean out the carb bowl of water. Change ALL fluids and oil filter. Clean and oil air filter. Remove the gas tank, empty the gass, and let drip dry upside down to remove moisture. Remove the spark plug squirt WD-40 in the cylinder, turn over the engine to remove the water from the cylinder. Water can't compress by doing this the water will blow out from the spark plug hole. After the ATV has been reassembled change the fluids after riding for a few hours for added piece of mind.

well, all i can tell u is past experences, im sure that they arent the best way to do it, but it worked for us. all we did when it stalled in the water because of sucking it right in the intake, was drag it out, drain the oil plug, screw it back in, put a little oil in, and ride it up and down the road a few times, then repeat that step untill the oil u get out is the same color that you put in. but im sure there is a lot more u can do than that, like the post posted by "vakero" above mine. rider1169
