My Recon was a fun machine to ride. So don't be too sad about spending less. The Ozark is supposed to be good too. The gas mileage will be better with a 250. I would average about 12 mph. So the gas mileage was over or around 40 mpg.
I haven't bought a Recon lately but I'll start this out. Hopefully others will follow.
Back in 2001, I bought a 2001 Recon for $3300.00 out the door. I think the retail was around $3500. back then. The price included everything plus a hitch. (ask them to throw in a hitch) Honda has reduced the Recon's prices since then. So it should even be cheaper depending on the model.
I always try to aim at least a couple hundred under retail. I'm sure others have gotten better deals.

I think it may be all your fault that this will be the THIRD atv I have bought in a year....
Just kidding....<grin>
I have quotes all over the place.....from 3699 to the best one for a 2004 recon at 3080 OTD
Had a Bayou quoted at 2799.00 do you know anything about them..??
Ozark is about 3199.00 plus freight....to 3500
Boy do I ever hate that "freight".....
I just about wont buy from a dealer that plays that game.....its stupid....
The best was 3080 OTD for the Recon.... a green one.... blah...but who cares I suppose....
Thanks for the info....

The Bayou 220 was out for a while. Now they have the Bayou 250. Some people seem to like the Bayou. I have a cousin with a Bayou 300 4x4. I would rather have a Recon or Ozark. It's just that the Bayou 220 has been out since 1988. Then they changed a couple things and made a 250. I guess I just like the Recon and Ozark better.
It's the same idea with a Beartracker. It started out as a Timberwolf 250 in 1992. Then the Timberwolf 250 2x4 had a name change in 1999. Changed to Beartracker. These are just older machines that tend to be a little heavy. They still do what they are supposed to do. They are just rougher around the edges.
The Recon came out as a 1997 machine. Honda has made a couple changes. They added things like ES, floor boards, oil tank for cooling. I like that the motor is aligned with the drive shaft so it has less angles. Which is supposed to allow more power to get to the ground. The only thing I don't like about the Recon is the drum brakes. The brakes didn't cause any problems. I would just rather have disc. I can buy disc to replace the drums on my 450. You can't with the Recon.
The Ozark seems to get good ratings. It has a few more cc's.
Have you had a chance to ride any of the quads?
$3080. seems like a good price. Is it for the foot shift model? Would you rather a red or yellow quad? Maybe they could just get the color you want for the same price.

The Recon is much better than the Ozark. I don't know why anyone would pick a Ozark over a Recon. The Ozarks are always priced higher than the Recons. j/k

Hey,
Went to look at the difference between the Ozark and Recon today....
I do like the Ozark...its priced at 3499.00
I do like the Recon...got a good quote at 3080.00 ....think thats a good price..???????
Now here is the thing... while at the Honda shop.... we saw a "sporttrax 250".....
For 150 more than the Recon.....
"I" like having the racks....... etc..... Hubby thinks the Sporttrax would be more "fun"....
WEll....
I suppose I dont need a second "utility" quad...I already have the Kodiak.....
maybe a "sport" machine would be fun.....
Whats your opinion....????
What is the difference between the Sporttrax and the recon (other than plastic and weight)
and hte Ozark..??
if I have decided to go with the recon..... is the sporttrax just as good, and reliable...??
maybe justa bit more "fun"????
Damn....I thought I had this all figured out....... <grin>.......
I rode the Ozark..... I liked it.....didnt get a chance to ride the Recon or Sporttrax.....
but they are 500 cheaper than the Ozark.....
the Ozark does look like it has more of a "sport" suspension... than the Recon...
Opinions PLEASE...????
Thanks ...Deb

The 250ex has the same motor as the Recon. The 250ex handles better and has a higher top speed. (approx. 47 & 52 mph) I think the gearing is different and 250ex has disc brakes in the front. The ground clearance is lower with the 250ex because of the tires. There are a few differences.
I like the idea. The 250ex would be more fun to ride. I'd mount a skid plate under it to protect it's belly. I had a plastic Maire skid on my Recon that worked great. If you need a rack, you could probably mount one on the grab bar. I had one on my Warrior. They mount with 4 bolts and are easy to mount and easy to remove. Shadetreepowersports has a rear rack for the 250ex for $78.99. #81-1370.
In the mags- They usually seem to like the Ozark a little more than the Recon. They also usually like the 250ex a little more than the Z250. So the 250ex must be the best of them all. It's really a matter of opinion.
I wonder if Honda is going to have a 250ex in black like the other models?

Thanks !!
So you think that the 250ex would be the way to go.....?
Just a bit more fun than the "recon"....
do you think the 250ex would climb and trail ride just as well as a Recon, or Ozark..???
I suppose its a "mind" think with me..... I am a redneck I suppose...ha... I like the "meaty" looks of the utility quads vrs the "sporty" ones...
But I also know that the Kodiak is much more "cumbersome" when trailriding...and a 250EX "may" be just a bit more fun...
<sigh>..........I swear I hate making descisions....
I suppose your right, I can mount a small rack on it "just in case"....hahahah
Thanks....again......and again....

If I was going to buy a second quad, I would consider the 250ex. Especially since I already have a utility. I like the simplicity of the 250ex. It doesn't have a chain to oil but does have disc brakes in the front. The tires are different from a utility so it will handle a little different. It also has the semi-auto with no clutch compared to other sport models with a clutch. It's not a race quad but would still be fun to ride.
The 250ex would be just the ticket for the trails around here. My Recon was geat at hopping over trees, driving under trees and gates, and winding through trees. The 250ex is lighter so it might hop better than the Recon. Sometimes it's fun to ride a smaller and lighter quad.
It would be great if you could take a 250ex for a test ride.
It really depends on where you ride. Take your time so you make the right decision.
Maybe you could go look at a couple used quads. Just to be able to test ride the different models and then buy new.
