Should be on the rough part.If there isnt any on the pull the plug to get the rest out and refill it.Dont worry if you over fill it excess will go out the vent.If it is bone dry expect to bereplacing the seal soon if not the complete unit.

Just to add to ftwflh, the balance sump only holds about 70cc's of oil (not a whole lot). If you experience excessive smoking from the exhaust pipe when running, then the crankshaft seal inside the oil sump is probably leaking, allowing the "suction" of the engine to pull the oil through the seal - this may be just a bad seal, or the crankshaft bearings may be worn (allowing the crank to "flop" somewhat, opening up the seal lip) - if you decide to go in and repair it, I would suggest replacing the waterpump bearing and seals while you are in there.

To add to what these guys have said......just change the oil, its not that expensive and then you know what you got......you drain it from the underneath side, under the skid plate. The dipstick thing, I never really used that.....I always change it before it would need checking. Also when filling it, there is a plug, on the underneath side of the exhaust port, I think, but on the front of the motor anyways.....and when you fill, leave the plug out of there, and when it runs out of the hole....its full. That is how it is supposed to be done.
