i just bought a 1987 suzuki quadracer,it needed a clutch so i could realy ride it around. it pops out of second gear.it will shift into second gear, but as soon as you hit the gas it pops right out. when the quad is shut off,you can put it in second and push it,and it will stay in second gear and turn the motor over, but as soon as you hit the gas,it pops right out. please help,im supposed to go riding this weekend, and i have no friggin second gear

well it could be several things . weak shift can spring , weak springs behind the cam , bad shift fork , bad second gear , bad slider some can be fixed without spliting the cases like the springs and dogs , but the others you will need to split the cases . the springs are fairly cheap to do and i would try them first . regaurdless if it is internal they should be replaced also .

My bet is on the cam gear spring. Mine use to do that as well a few years ago. Ended uptaking the whole thing apart to check it out. The spring was tired. Afetr fixing hat no more problem.

wouldnt the shift can spring cause all the gears to slip? what things would cause ONLY second gear to slip? i mean it doesnt pull AT ALL in second,it slips right out,but when im stopped and the engine is off you can put it in second, and roll it forward, itl make the motor turn just a second and then slip out.its definitely going to second, but not for long.

Cam gear spring is inside the main case. You have to split the case to get to it. What happens to it is when it wares out it doesn't let the gear fully engage in the gear shift cam so it pops out. Pretty common thing actually. It's also a goos time to inspect the gears and shift forks and shafts..
