Tips Please: Duramatic Cover Removal
#1
I dumped my 03 500FIS Auto in the Hay River the other day! I kept the engine dry but filled the tranny. I pulled the tran drain plug to remove the water but am concerned with the silty contaminations that could be left over. So...I set to pull the cover...NOT!!! It would seem that I have to completely disassemble the whole right side foot rest and foot brake connections. What is up with that???!!!! I know that belts are supposed to last longer and what not but removing the belt cover is a routine maintenance item and should be much easier to access than that!! Pulling apart the right side footrest is not a big prob while at home...but what about in the bush where a guy could shred a belt dragging a moose? And to add to the problem...try to find the right tool in the tool kit to remove that cover!!
I gotta be missing something here...any tips to git dat dang cover off??
Thanks....

I would be hesitant to remove it unless you are having problems. The A/C has a toothed belt on the 500 auto that doesn't slip on the clutch pulleys from what my dealer tells me. He also said that belt failures are virtually non-existent and has sold several 400/500 machines that have gone over 4000 miles with belt replacement.

ya gotta take the whole right side apart.....it's the only way....did it to mine to replace the tranny seal and belt....seal went out and wrecked the belt and covered everything in engine oil....was a lot of fun! ya right....so anyway don't plan on taking the cover off in the woods......and if you ever do take the cover off get a gasket for it ahead of time because more likely then not it will tear when you pull off the cover, and even if it doesn't tear you should replace it anyways
you may want to pull the cover and blow out everything with some compressed air.......sand and metal do not mix well......have fun
