On the left side of the quad up in front right infront of the handlebars behind the light there is a little black cap that can be unscrewed and the dipstick comes out and u can check ur oil.

One thing I might add is the flat rubber gasket/ring they use to seal the cap suck and lets oil seep out. Not too much but gets messy.... Replace it with a rubber o-ring and walaaa ! No more oozing !
Oh yea and it can be a pain in the **** trying to get the dipstick back in ... theres a small hole you need to get it through. I dont know if they changed that after the 2001s... probably not.

yea its kinda hard to get at and unscrew im thinking about a metal dipstick i seen on the net somewhere..forget where but it was about half inch taller... it stuck out a ways.

When all else fails read the instructions<manual> LOL. Man, exact same thing for me I was like what the "blank" pulled out the owners manual, heck I thought that cap was for the radiator! Just an FYI, if you change your oil, make sure you drain the reserve tank in the front, I found this out the hard way, they don't even mention it in the manual but it holds like half a quart of oil.
