ssgsteve,
You need the adapter so that the 1/2-20 threads will fit into the 3/8th inch pipe threads, without the adapter they will not come close to fitting.
3.5 qts - you may be doing it right, I think I usually fill mine to near the top of the oil marker - as long as you don't go over (most systems can handle up to 20% extra oil without issues) more oil is just that much more fluid keeping your parts cleaner and suspending the gunk.

3 1/2 qts. is probably fine. the book says 3.6 atvadict01 said "under" 3.5 I have never put under 3.5 allthough, its a dry sump. so, a little more or a little less in the tank will not hurt anything. as long as the pump has a supply the engine does not care how much oil is in the tank.

So it could be just a matter of how you read the dipstick. I read one post where someone
painted theirs to make it easy to read.Anyone know what kind of paint?Engines are expensive
i dont want to do any damage.

if I remember right, they just used a paint pen. white would probably be best. I think it would be such a small amount that even if it did come loose it would not hurt anything. plus, it probably would not get past the screen in the supply line.
