Hey group,

My daughters 50 is having a hard time starting. Changed out the battery and killed it. Any suggestions on improving this issue before I pull the carb apart? I first thought it was the coil, but it's working fine.

As a suggestion, ensure it has fresh gas. I have a weed eater and it wouldn't start properly last week. I changed its gas, chocked the heck of out it to flush the old gas from its line, then it fired right up. Ran as good as the day we bought it. If that doesn't work, ensure gas is flowing down its line. Sometimes, dirt gets in the line & gas valve and plugs it up. If that's working fine, then you may have dirt in the carb. When it doesn't start, check its plug several times. If too wet, then it could be bad gas. You might even want to change its plug. Many years ago, I had a spark plug that wouldn't spark under pressure. If all else fails, you may have to tear aparts its carb. Even a littl grain of sand on float needle could stop it from starting.

Just a thought if this unit has an electric choke, they are prone to fail. Eton has put out a conversion kit that goes from the auto choke to a manual one. good luck.

The quad has a manual choke on the bars but that too seems to not work properly. I'm looking in to removing the oil injector. I need to some thing quick because I ride 3x a week and it's driving my daughter crazy. (who can blame her)

First of all you need to determine whether you are not getting any fuel or no spark.Pull fuel line off of carb to make sure fuel is reaching the carb(the reserve setting doesn't seem to work on the vipers so fill up the tank).Put in a fresh spark plug and crank it for a few seconds.If it doesn't start take a look at the plug to see if its wet or not.If its still dry turn on the manual choke(make sure your turning it the right way,pushing it to the left is on)Crank it again.If it still doesn't start check the plug again.If its still dry try removing the air cleaner and put your hand over the carb opening and try to start it again. It should start now if its getting spark.If the plug is wet you need to determine if the plug isn't firing or its flooding.Turn the fuel off and with the spark plug removed and the kill switch on,crank it over to clear the cylinder out and reinstall dry plug and try again.If the plug remains dry and you don't even get a kick you must have an ignition problem.We have a Viper 90 and it starts very well with the manual choke.There is no need to replace the carb,we've had zero problems in two years now.

 

Yeller, I can't even start to explain how much easier my starts are now.

Couldn't let the quad sit for more than 4-5 days and couldn't kill the quad without getting it up to full operating temp then running it. Not following these rules meant it was time to pull out the chain lube (starter fluid). Got frustrating at times. I am so happy I switched carbs!

I'm assuming the manual choke is an add-on because the specs I've looked at, the carb looked identical to my old 16mm mikuni knock-off??? When he says "hard time starting", I'm assuming it runs OK once it gets going?

I've been working on bikes for some time now. I pulled the bowl apart and was filled with oil and smelt like old fuel. I cleared it out with fresh fuel and now recharging the battery. btw, do you happen to know why I can't turn over the manual crank? I took the kick lever off the PW 50 and put it on the viper but would not move. It was frozen for some reason. Anyhow, we'll see what happen in the morning after my ride.
