Well my son got to take a trx90 for a rip on Sunday and he loves the whole shifting thing. Now he tells me he wants to sell the predator and get the TRX.

I know I am going to get the whole 2stroke, 4stroke speach, but he really liked riding it(TRX). If I deciede to get the trx90 what should I be expecting to get from a private sale for the 03 predator 90????

Maybe he'll change his mind....LOL

he is going to be 8 on the 24th of nov.
he said that it steered easier than his as it should because the trx had 10 psi in the front tires and his have about 3 or 4 .so i will air them up so it steeres easier.
he likes to shift,he thinks that because you can shift, the quad will be faster.i tried to explain to him that they are roughly the same top speed.(are they?)

the pros for the pred are:
- it's quick and fast
-cheap and easy to fix (hey, its a 2 stroke!)
-responds well to mods(he does not race and will not in the near future)
-elec start (no,i do NOT want to go into a mud puddle to pull start his quad!),back up kick, can put on lights without buying a stator, nice suspension!,full floor boards, looks good(did i miss anything else?)

the cons-

-more frequent repairs (hey,its a 2 stroke)
-not the best quality
-stator (need i say more?)
-who the hell decided to put the air filter BEHIND THE FRONT TIRE???!?!?!(NICE!!)
-as moody as....i better not go there...

trx 90 pros:

-it's a 4 stroke
-dependable
-top notch quality(honda uses bearings for the steering stem base...NICE!!)
-solid engine
-low maintenence
-no drive belt
-nice sealed rear drum brake(i dunno bout the front)

trx 90 cons:

-very expensive to mod(especially for racing)
-very expensive to fix
-no floor boards
-umm..where's the stator?
-umm..where's the grab bar?
-umm..where's the start button?
-umm.. what suspension? falling down a rocky hill is more confortable
-umm..i have to PULL what to start it???
-EEEEWWWW,NO STYLE,i've seen combovers look more styilish!wake up honda!someone has over slept....by a decade!!!yawn...what year is this???
-stock tires are horrible!!unless you enjoy rolling over in a turn.
-...yellow...

Hey Terd,

I'm getting dizzy reading your pros & cons. On the more serious side..... Yes, each brand does have their pros & cons. If Honda would replace their pull cord with electric start, they'd regain the market segments they keep loosing to the electric start minis. Electric Start and Auto transmission was 2 big selection criteria items on our feature list.

Wanting to change mini brands &/or its colour is one of the primary reasons I had my son deeply involved in selecting his own model. And, why it took us 4 months to narrow down our selection list. If my son changes his mind on his Pred-90, I simply say, "you picked it - you live with it until you can afford your own replacement". End of story.

Do what you feel is best for your "young rider" and you.

PS. Welcome back. I missed reading many of your posts.

terd, we HAD the TRX 90, and now have a Raptor 80. I like it better because of the electric start, and it goes through water much better than the Honda did. Honda constantly got swamped and needed carb drained as it would stall.

both are 3-speeds. Yamaha is electric start. i think both are shaft drives (Yamaha definitely is). i think yamaha and honda resale and dependability are equal .and the raptor is more stylish since everyone seems to copy that body style. something to consider. the more i think about it, the more i think Honda was chain drive.

I'm kind of partial to those sagittariuses! Mine's the 28th!

I admit if I did a lot of riding in mud, then I'd probably want the honda. CVT's and mud don't mix. Evidently neither do stators. And doesn't the honda have shaft drive? Be better too.

I'm shocked he can shift good. 7 is young to learn. Must be smart like his mama!

You should see my set-up. I've got a wide-open K&N behind my tire. Won't let my kid ride in wet conditions, which usually isn't a problem around here. I have seen intakes to re-route it under the seat.

To clarify: The TRX 90 is a 4-speed chain drive.

IMO, if you trail ride the weak link with the TRX is the drum brakes. The front drums are not sealed at all, in fact, there are two 1/4" holes that lead directly into the brakes. Rear drum is actually worse. While it is sealed, the seals are not good enough to keep water & mud out BUT they are sealed well enough to keep the same water trapped inside the brakes once it gets there.

Recommended tire pressure with stock tires is 2.9 psi. Much more than that and you'll quickly see the limits of the 2.2" of suspension travel. However, under normal trail riding conditions, the stock suspension works fine.

The pull start is a pain in the a$$. On top of that, the TRX is very cold blooded and takes several minutes of throttle & choke play to warm up. On the flip side, often it will start on the first pull, especially when warm. As this is about the only non-electric start mini out there, it's about time for Honda to see the light here.

Say what you want to about 2-stroke vs 4-stroke, but the TRX with a fairly low first gear has great - easy to use low end power. My son can take his anywhere we can go with our full size 4x4's - only getting stuck when he gets high centered in a rut. Maier has a full length skid plate that helps that situation out.

All around performance and reliability are great. It runs forever on a tank of gas and can hit just over 30 MPH. If it had electric start I think that hands down it would be the best mini out there. Even without the electric start, it's hard to beat it for an overall trail riding mini.
