not sure what is causing this but when its colder out(at least when i notice it) my tach on my sportsman will only read up to 5500 and when i punch it and hear the engine revv higher the tach reads less RPMs what is that??? what could be causing it

Your charging system may need some attention. When the voltage gets low it does some funny things. Mine was doing the same thing.

 

so what exactly am i lookin for ill take it down to the dealer and tell them to look at it i dont really know anything about the alternator and charging systems. i looked under the battery voltage and its right around 12.5 to 13volts running and 12 volts not running.. talking cold like 20s to 30s not too cold

 

Your voltages do seem a bit low. Mine is 12.5 off, 14.6 running according to the diagnostic mode. I didn't put a meter on it.

 

I should add that while you are a bit low compared to me, the electronics should still operate normally - 13v is well within tolerance.
