Temp light short?

Temp light short?
I tried to do a search but no luck. My temp light came on while riding yesterday, caught me about 15 miles from home. I rode back, the coolant didn't go up to the "HOT" mark, the oil level is fine. Could the light have a short in it, and is there a way I can check it without taking it to the rude Honda shop?
