Need to verify book spec's on CDI, Coil & Regulator, on a TRX-125
#1
Good Morning,
I recently purchased a '86 Honda TRX-125 for my kids, and it seemed great when the original owner pull-started it right up, and it ran just fine ! When I got it home, it started acting up, and has not been right.
First, it doesn't want to stay running after replacing a battery, carb rebuilding, valves adjusted, replacing with fresh fuel. It started running better, but only runs for a few minutes, and the carb adjustment has to be turned up to maximum idle speed to keep it going, till it finally dies. I pulled the Coil, CDI and Regulator, and using both digital and analog meters, measured the resistance according to my Clymer's manual, and some of the results don't make any sense.
For example, the coil's primary winding (according to the book) is supposed to be .18 to .20 ohms, and the secondary between 3.7 and 4.5 ohms ? Mine measures .2 for primary (right on target), but the secondary is 9,360 ohms (which is not even close). And since the ratio of windings are supposed to be about a 100 to 1, it would make sense that the secondary be much higher than book spec's indicate.
This same is happening with both the CDI (which is off on 11 out of 30 test points), and the Voltage Regulator (which is off on ALL resistance measurements). These units seem to be in much better physical condition than anything I have found on ebay.
Does anyone have another book besides the Clymer's (M311) Honda Fourtrax 1970-1987 that covers a 1986 Honda Fourtrax TRX-125 ?
I am looking for someone to call to compare specifications found in these books.
It appears that Honda (reselling the Shindengen CDI and Voltage Regulator-rectifier), has discontinued the CDI, so my only choices are replacement with a used one that could possibly have the same fate, or another manufacturer's that probably doesn't have the same measurable specifications.
So far, I have found replacement (supposedly OEM equivelents or will work)
Coil #604-1301 from Hyperparts.com $25
CDI - #CDI TRX from mfgsupply.com $69
Voltage Regulator - #01-090-1 from mfgsupply $46 (not plug-in compatible - needs wiring)
Anyone with ideas or feedback, would be most appreciated.
