Importing from Oregon to California, any problems?
#1
Depending on my taxes, I may be in the market for a new quad. I found some dealers up in Oregon that has the quad and price I want. If I buy this thing in Oregon and bring it back into California will I have to pay any taxes or surcharges or any other stupid charges? Any other problems with doing this? If someone has done this, please reply and let me know if there was any problems. Thanks in advance.

I think you will end up paying taxes on the purchase price. Have friends that did the same thing(buying in Oregon), around a year or so ago. They ended up registering them in Oregon, they are not sure, if they will register them in Ca. I know with a car, it has to have over 2,000 miles on it, to get registered in Ca. without penalties. I just bought a quad that is still registered in Missouri, can only think, I'll end up paying taxes on the purchase price. You know the state wants their money

If you want to register the ATV (green sticker) then YES you will have to pay sales tax on the purchase price when you go to wait in line at DMV.

Where do you find good deals in oregon? Do they ship or you have to drive there to pick it up. I'm also in the market to buy one. My state don't require registration. I don't have to deal with dmv.

Ozark, I don't know the name of the Suzuki dealer up by Coos Bay, but that's where my friends bought their Z400s. They bought 3 and saved about $800 each from Ca. prices. So for them, it was worth the drive. Don't know if the dealer would deliver.

Thanks for the reply's. I have been going over my taxes and it looks like I will have WAY more expensises than I thought. Not looking good, but I wll see what the book keeper says.
I also remember that this will be farm "equipment" so the tax is like 1.5% or something like that so the fuel to go up there won't justify the sales tax.
The Kawasaki dealer I was looking at was east of Portland.

Just an update. Friends of mine that bought their Z400s in Oregon, went to DMV (week before Thanksgiving)and registered them in Ca. It only costed them the $25 for registration. They told the clerk, they were brought into Ca. 18 months ago(when she inquired) so, she didn't charge them sales tax on the purchase price They were also "Green Stickered".
Later today,(seeing it's 1am) I'll be taking my Z400 to DMV to register it in Ca. I'll post how my experience goes Lt. Dan

Update on my experience of registering an out of state (Missouri) atv in California. I went to DMV to register it. I only had to pay the sales tax (7.325 in my area) on the purchase price. Plus $25, for the 2 year registration. It did not get a "Red Sticker" because it didn't meet the criteria. Eighth digit wasn't a "3" or a "C".
Now, all out of state vehicles need to be visually inspected, so, bring it with you to your appointment. Make sure, the engine and VIN number are visible. They want to see all the manufacturers stickers on the vehicle. So, if you buy from out of state, I'd make sure they have them. If they don't, I think it will be more of a hassle to register it.
Bottom Line, I wouldn't rule out buying another out of state quad. Just make sure of the VIN numbers so, it doesn't get red stickered and it has the manufacturers stickers. Lt. Dan
