electrical disaster

well here i go again. a problem i thought i had taken care of is back. what i got is a ds that started and ran fine and after 6 weeks at sea i come home to start it and the problem started again. i got power to everything when i turn on the key, lights etc . everything. but when i hit the starter to start it, the lights go out on the dash and i get nothing. checked the battery and its good. the last time i had this problem i chased down what i thought was a loose ground but now its back and i checked everything again and i am at my wits end with this thing. my electrical system sucks. i am trying to stay optimistic. i just got home and put on new a-arms and shocks and would have loved to take it for a spin so that is mainly where my negativity is coming from. any comments fellas?

My guess would be that you once again have a ground problem. I see your IN VA beach. Thats about as close to salt air as you can get and that causes major corosion.
Can you let it set for a little and then everything has power again? Until you hit the starter button again?
Where did you find the last bad ground connection at. This time it sounds like it would be the main ground at either the battery or where the main ground from the battery to the frame is.
Your not Blowing fuses right?

Hello Bombsaint. I hear your pain man. This could also be a bad connection at either battery connector, or either end of the pos or negative cables. It could also be a bad crimp on the connector where it attaches to the battery cables. This can be particularly dificult to diagnose because the cable looks ok. Try twisting the cable at the connector to make sure it does not move. Lastly, it can be in the circuit or any connector between the battery, key switch and starter solenoid. What is happening most likely (assuming the batter is fully charged and not bad) is that you have a marginal connection somewhere. It is capable of supplying current for the accessories. When you hit the starter, it places a much larger draw on the electrical system. The bad connection sparks and creates an oxidation layer that acts as an insulator, stopping all current flow. Hope this helps.

I would have to agree with brycegtx. it can + or - I would try taking all major conectors off. clean them with a scratch pad on a die grinder. or something equivalent, like scotch brite. then coat with dielectric grease after installed. mine did the same same out on the dunes one time. it was the + conector at the battery.

THANKS ,cjg. i am gonna post the pics of the front end on it tomorrow. only thing i am not happy about is the works shocks seem really stiff. the bike does not even budge when i sit on it. i had them build them for a 215 lbs and aggressive trail riding and some mx. they just seem really stiff. i hope they loosen up.
