Default Polaris Sportsman 500 Ho 2004.5 Grinding noise ?

Hello All ! Im new to the site and exicted to be here. I really could use some input on the newest problem my Polaris has had. It is a 2004.5 Sportsman 500 ho. When you first take off in high gear but your going slow I hear a grinding noise almost as if it where chain drive and the chain was slipping . It stops once your underway and will only do it when you are just barely moving in high gear. I also did notice the other day that I started it in gear and it begain to take off by itself slowly of course but it was "creeping" The noise I hear doesn't seem to be engine but rather transmission noise? Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks in advance ! JIm

Welcome Jim....
I believe the noise you hear is normal. I have a '05 700 EFI and it is really loud on the 700's....sounds like a chain slapping, etc. Its in the drivetrain...i.e. clutch/transmission....

Do a search in the Polaris forum for 'noise' and you can read all about it and other owners of the 500....

i was thinking he was more talking about the clunking noise....since he said it sounds like 'chain was slipping'....granted it doesn't have a chain, but his reference was to the sound....so I'm guessing this is the sound that all the Polaris's make...

might want to inspect the condition of your drive belt, might be the problem .

I guess it is more of a "clunking noise" The machine has 54 hours on it and I had never herd the noise before. I had a 2001 500 ho that as far as I can remember never made the noise. Well I can just wait and see if it gets worse. Thanks for the help.

if i do recall correctly there is a place where you can tighten the ammount of play in your drive train on the right side of the tranny that might need adjusting... my sportsman does make a very noticable clunking noise.. from what im hearing by your description it is normal as elkbow mententioned before... in other cases ride someone elses... just a thought
