squeaky front brakes on Yamaha Raptor 80
#1
We are looking at buying a used 2004 Yamaha Raptor 80. We test drove it today. It drove great except the front brakes were squeaky. The guy said that happens when it hasn't been ridden in a while.Does this sound like trouble? Any advice would be appreciated as we need to make this decision quickly....Santa Claus is coming!

Squeeking brakes can happen for many reasons. The most common are:
1 - The dealer did NOT follow the brake burnishing process. When brake pads are new (just out of plastic bag), you must ride 3/4 throttle and "hit the brakes" until a complete stop. This must be done a minimum 3 consecutive times - and don't let the brakes cool between full braking intervals. This process heats the outer surface of the brake pads and hardens them. If wondering, this barnishing must be done on adult size quads as well.
2 - Dirt or other small crud is sitting between your steel contact area and the brake pads. To check, you must take the brake hub off and wipe the pads and steel contact areas with brake cleaning solution and let dry for a few hours before putting back together again.
Most of the time, squeeky brakes are caused from improper "burnishing". Especially if it's a new quad that's been sitting on the showroom floor, and hasn't been through the complete end/end "rider readiness" checklist.
In the unit's manual, barnishing the brakes should be within its "read me 1st" or brake maintenance section.
Hope this helps...

Thanks for the reply. That quad is in really good shape except for the sqeaky brakes. It's a 200 Raptor 80 and he's asking $2000. Does that sound like a fair price? The plastic is in great shape and it rides great.

The price is kinda high to me. You can buy another brand new mini quads for less. Plus the front suspension on a Raptor is kinda un safe.I've seen these mini's flip very easy and they aren't very powerful. I myself would look around some more. This is just my thinking but you did ask.

From what I've seen at the tacks you will like the Dinli quads.I really haven't heard any bad about them. I'm not Bashing the Raptor 80. I'm a yamaha man myself. First the front wheels are conected together with an axel like system like a wagon. This quad is very tipsy on the slightest angel. I watched a boy flip his 3 times in 1 lap in a XC race.Plus the 80 4 stroke engine is very weak. The Dinli 90 will smoke it really bad.
