500, bigger is better, both these quads respond well to mods without losing much relibiality.. the 500 has plenty of power u shouldnt get bored with it i can even wheelie mine being as big as it is

I would not always say bigger is better but in the case between the 400 and 500 4x4's I would go with the 500 due to the weight of these awesome machines. just out of curiosity why not go new? for the price on some used models you can almost get a new 04' with the rebates and all ya know.

It depends on you, the 400 is a 2 stroke, and you can get alot more Hp out of it. I like both quads, Scrambler is a great trail quad.

Scramblers are some of the best trail quads IMO.

While I love my 4 stroke 500, there were times I wished I had the 2 stroke 400. The 400 is no doubt the one you want if you plan on modifying. The 400 is also a lighter machine. You also have to answer yourself what you like better, 2 stroke or 4 stroke?

I know this is the most disatisfying reply to hear when looking for help on a decision, but you can't go wrong with either one.

You need to be specific on what 400 you are talking about. The last true 400 4x4 Polaris was in 2002 in the 400 Scrambler X and the last of the 400 Explorers. Both were 400 2stroke.Now what they call a 400 is a renamed 425.If Iwanted another UTE it would be a 400 Explorer over the 500 .THey may need more maintanance but dont have all the IRS parts to go bad and wear out.
