reed question and running rich? 04 predator 90
#1
Hi,
I put in some boysen power reeds in my sons quad 04 predator 90, I took off the oil injector at the same time. It really woke up. However i did put the metal stops back on with the new reeds. Should i have done this? Also i think it runs rich (because of the smoke) with the new reeds in it. not all the time just when its cold, or when he stops for a bit and then starts up again and goes. but not all the time. Should i try moving the clip down one notch to lean it out a bit? or should i just mess with the mixture screw?
Im still new and learning all the tricks. We only ride the trails no racing so i dont want to sink a ton of money into it since he will out grow it after next year.
Thanks,
Bob

First what's the mixture ratio and type of oil?
Check your plug, but typically you have to go to a little bigger main jet after going pre-mix. Unless it stops after you get on the gas, it's probably not the carb settings.
If you do need to rejet, I'd buy a couple of vents for the airbox (assuming you don't ride in mud or water). Gain a little more power while you get it straightened out.

The plug looks black and a little oily. I have to check it the right way. it does stop smoking after hitting the gas thats why i think its a carb setting problem. Im not sure.
I run polaris blue oil at 32:1. also ride in mud and water.

At 32:1, it'll smoke a little and they all smoke some when they are cold. I'd have to see it to tell if it's excessive. If the quad has an auto choke, that'll give those symptoms.

Is "polaris blue oil" pre-mix based oil or is it Injection Only rated oil?
After several plug readings, you may want to tweak your mixture down to 34:1 or even 36:1. It could be the carb as well. Check plug reading before tweaking your oil mixture.
Hope this helps...

Its rated for both i believe. I use it in my 99 sport 400 and its seems fine. I get a little smoke. what about the reed stops? Should i take them out or leave them in?

Not too sure about your reed question. Might be one of those "try it with, then try it without" things to determine if you feel difference. The upgraded WRH Reeds in our Pred-90 came in a block, and we simply install the block. Didn't have to play with or even heard of the reed stops for it.
** Then again, don't play with the reeds until you hear feedback from an experienced Reed Specialist. Removing the stoppers could cause damage to the reeds. **
2 strokes should smoke a little. If they had NO smoke, then I'd seriously worry. Visual is one simple way of testing the Pre-mix ratio. I've been told the best way is to perform proper oil mixture is plug readings during many different temperature and altitude changes. Find "the norm" for your machine and oil brand you are using, then tweak up/down as needed.
In case you don't already know, you can read the plug by using the following info:

If "putt putting" in the mud & water with lower RPMs (like our family), some recommend a "P" plug and a little hotter plug. This type of hoter plug helps keep carbon off its plug much better. For more details on NGK Spark Plug codes, surf: http://sparkplugs.com/images/ngksparkplug.jpg
Hope this helps as well....
