Need help with 1988 300 4x4
#1
hello
recently bought a well abused 88 honda 300 4x4 motor did not run , the problem i have is no spark ( we went through the whole motor all rebuilt) . I have power into the CdI box (not sure if its good) Dealer said to make sure that i had power coming in from the pulse generator (stator?) I followed the directions in the clymer manual on checking it and everything checked out good , still no power coming out? Did i miss something? I did not take the side cover off to access it , do i need to drain the fluids before opening this up? The only other thing the dealer told me was make sure the kill switch wasnt grounding out
but that all seems to be working just fine. Any help you give will be a appreciated , would just like to hear this thing run before spending more money on this thing. I have heard these are great machines. Thank You !

There are two boxes under the hood. One is the CDI and the other is the oil pressure sensor one, i think.
Try this,
Tap on one of them and see if you get a single spark while bumping the starter. You have to turn the ignition off and back on every time to try it. I don't remember which one it is, but it is the CDI.
I would almost bank on that being your problem.
Oh yeah, when I say tap, I mean with a BFH, but not soo hard that you demolish the units.
On mine, when the CDI went bad, you could tap it and ride for about 30 minutes. after you shut it down, you had to re-tap it to make it work.

Thank you for the reply to my question. I was a little nervous to go beating on the cdi box at first but figured what do i have to lose!!! Well I hit it with my hand and nothing , gave it a good rap and we have spark , Feels good to hear it run!!!!! Since i bought it with out hearing it run. Do you remember how much your cdi box cost you? dealer i talked with was over a hundred something like 119.00 seemslike a lot for a little box like that.

I ordered all of my parts for that ATV from Bike Bandit.com . They have online schematics and you can actually see the parts you need.
Their part number is 172019-001. I don't know if that is the same as the Honda p/n or not. I just checked and it was $119 there, too.
By the way, if you ride more than a few minutes, you'd better carry extra spark plugs with you. They will go out while normal riding and you will be whereever you stopped until you change it.
I will be out of town for 3 days with cancer treatment consultations, but if you need any more help with it, I'll reply as soon as I get home.
