hi, im 15 and own a 1972 yamaha 175 dirt bike. i got it for free and put around $650 dollars into it. When i got it to run i would only work with the choke on. so i took it to a place to have them fix it. well they didnt do very well. they broke my kicks start and redrilled my jetts!!! not what i had in mind. well im not sure wearther to put around $200 more into it or sell it. im thinking of getting another used bike or fourwheeler. i cant spend over $1000 because i need a car soon. im not sure what to do?? what would you do?? im also not sure why it wont run right. i races and goes down then races again. i think it might be jetting, but im not sure. it was sitting for about 10 years so im thinking a carb soak for a day might be best, and i might replace the jett he redrilled. do you think that soaking the carb is a good cheap idea?? or is there a better way?? thanks for all your help... its a two stroke

 

My rule of thumb is not to spend more then the machine is worth.

If i was you i would get a little newer dirt bike.

Like a 1989/1990 CR125.

I agree with blackraptor, don't sink money into a bike which has less value than the parts your replacing.
you can sell it as is and get some cash back out of it and then get a new/newer bike or better yet get rid of the oldie and get a quad. by the way, from what you said sounds like the shop you took the bike to doesn't know what there doing if they are drilling out your jets. hope you didn't pay much for there services if the bike still doesn't run correct.

Drilling out the jet was a bad idea. New jets are about 4 bucks.
Check to see if there are reeds in the intake, between the carb and motor. If they are chipped or broke, itll run crappy. If you dont have them, or if they look ok, check the compression with a gauge, it may need new rings.
Youll have to fix the carb, and at the minimum, replace the drilled out jets.
You may want to hang on to it, because it wont take much money to fix it, if you do the work. And its a good education on working on motors. Check the local library, in the 629. area for service manuals, lots of librarys have them on these bikes. Or buy one on ebay or somewhere else , and do the work yourself.
For a grand...youre not gonna get much of a quad.
Dont feel bad, Ive have many free motorcycles, that I spent too much on, but I just think about the education I got from working on them, and it was worth it.

thanks i think i might keep it and i might get another one also. there is a 1991 kawasaki kx250 which is a motocross bike. the guys says it needs a rebuild... which i learned how to do from my old bike. he is selling for $500 but i can probably get it for $400-450 do you thin,k it is worth it?? to get a new piston and rings is like $150 bucks

 

If you could come up with $1,500 to 2k you could get a good used 250 or 400 TB /Scrambler!
