Default dumb insurance question

I have a dumb question. Why get insurance on an atv? If it stollen at your house your homeowners will cover it. If it is in an accident while you are towing or hauling it your auto coverage will cover it. Whats the need for atv insurance? Progressive quoted me $220 a year for my little recon which is rediculous IMO. If you guys can explain why you need insurance on an atv then I will get coverage but NOT with progressive. Please explain!

You sure about that? I'd call your ins. company 'cause I don't think they're covered if they are stolen. If you park your car in the garage and it's stolen homeowners doesn't cover it and I believe you may be mistaken about the accident also. Reasons to have it? Liability for one! Replacement value if you total it. Fire, theft...... I'm sure there's more

Default dumb insurance question

I'd call and check to make sure, a quad aint no lawn equipment. I know for a fact that my auto ins. ain't gonna pay for my trailer if I crash it while I tow it.

If your quad is in the back of your truck and it's stolen(either the quad or the truck), good luck collecting for the quad!!

I know there has to be an Ins. writer on these forums somewhere, help us out here............

I will call tomorrow and see what my agent has to say. We have been personal friends with him for 30 years.

I think your quote is too high. I pay $136 / year for my Rancher. Check with your regular agent, if it's not Progressive. My quad is not covered by my homeowner's or my auto policy. Don't know if that's industry standard, or not. Also, I've got $100,000 bodily injury included on my policy which would cover my liability if I run over someone. Also, I have $5,000 collision coverage for accident damage. I use Farmer's Insurance.

Default dumb insurance question

I also have nationwide home owners insurance and I recieved a letter this past spring that they no longer cover atv's. My dealership quoted me over two hundred dollars for each four wheeler that i purchased. Close to 440, for both machines through Progressive Insurance company. I declined and decided to shop around. Another agency and company offered the same coverage for about half that price. Then I saw progressives ad on the internet and decided to call them myself..They insured both my new atv's with libilaty and theft for 218 dollars a year!! Thats both atv's, not one. The dealership was trying to sell a theft only policy with the same company for twice that! Call Progressive direct before you count them out. I am glad I did..

Try Foremost also. I'm in CA and all three of mine for full coverage with 300k, 100k, 50k limits was a little over $500/ year. That was the cheapest I found thru anyone............

Default dumb insurance question

Here is the deal with insurance policies and what they cover and what they don't. The basic rule of thumb is if an item can have it's own insurance policy then it will not be covered by any other coverage. So since an ATV can have it's own insurance policy, you're home owners policy will not normally cover it. There are exceptions to this, you just have to ask your insurance company.

You're lawn stuff stolen from your garage was covered because "lawn stuff" cannot be insured on it's own separate policy but an ATV can be.

Default dumb insurance question

I had some of those same questions and I did ask my agent. They cover my shed/shop, the tools, lawnmowers, and other contents, but not motorized recreational equipment. My little shed is covered for up to about $9,000, but again that does not cover my quad or bike.

I am talking to Progressive right now about covering the rides. It is going to run just over $250 to cover a 2000 model KTM and a 2004 Honda Recon. It covers loss (fire, theft, etc.) but it also has the above mentioned liability coverages. I do not consider myself a high risk client (I don't race, jump, or hot dog when I ride), but they say the HAVE to include the liability in with the loss insurance.

It is kind of expensive to cover my puttering and trail riding, but I had another motorcycle stolen a while back. If not for that, I would not have even thought about it. That little event put a wrench in my recreational life. Not a terribly expensive loss, but it really threw me for a loop. It does help you sleep a little better knowing that your stuff is protected from the bad guys that are lurking EVERYWHERE!
