my buddy finally got a sled, i finally talked him into getting one so we can ride in the winter here too. He got a 97 arctic cat 440. its his first sled so i didnt really push the whole going bigger thing. I told him its not going to be as fast as mine but it will definately be fun none the less.
it is a 97 cat 440 ZR liquid cooled twin
96 studs, 1" track
plastic ski's
racing clutch
fox shocks (front and rear)
and overall body shape is a 8 out of 10 (couple minor hood cracks)
he paid 1200.00 for it.
not a bad deal, booked for 1800. i told him he would prolly be able to sell it next year and probably not lose much out of it. he will definately want the 600 or bigger next year though. about 1 time when we go down a road and i smoke him hes gonna be pist about that.
anybody else getting into the sledding season?????

i got a new artic cat pantera 600. it has good power for a 2 up sled, and even has a remote starter. gotta love fuel injection, lol. also got a polaris 500 indy, 98. it has only 1100 miles on it, so it has lots of life left in it. when the snow hits 1 foot or more, the griz gets real slow, but the sleds hit 90! heehee. got to love snowstorms now!

That's a nice pick up for that price, those 440 liquid's are quick out of the hole.
I've got my Mach1 670 that moves out pretty well, and I might be picking up an older MXZ440 fan in a few weeks.

If his 440 still runs good, I wouldn't be so sure that you will smoke him, your 96 vmax isnt' exactly quick, those 440's were very fast for their size back then. With d&d's single pipe, lid, correct jetting and reeds those 440's are capable of slightly over a hundred horse without out any porting and with the stock compression.

on a somewhat cold day my sled will hit almost 110mph. you cannot possibly tell me that his 440 is gonna come close to that. i give it 90 tops. might get there quicker cuz it has a racing clutch and 96 stufds and mine had neither yet, but as far as top end i KNOW i have him beat.

I used to have a 97 zr440 snow-pro (the standard zr wasn't all that much slower) I didn't have a speedo as it was a tach only machine and the zr440's are set up gearing wise for snow-cross, not top speed lake runs, but when I was bone stock except for some clutching mods, d&d lid, and a re-jet; I was able to pull on my buddies 99 zr600 all the way from a dead stop to what he said was up over 100. Speedo's on snowmobiles aren't accurate though, so who knows, but he moral of the story is that I was able to pull on a good running 600 class machine that was no slouch top end with my 440. The genII 440's are definitely outdated, but do not underestimate them.

o im sure, i dont doubt you a bit. his 440 has 96 studs and a clutch kit. mine has no studs and doesnt have my clutch kit in it yet. i am positive he could pull me out of the hole. but im almost positive that my top end speed would beat his. i raced my buddy from downstate who had a 2001 mxz500 and he pulled out of the hole alot quicker than me but top speed i passed him easily. i guess its all just myths and beliefs right now, but hopefully in the next few weeks we can get out and run em and see just exactly how they fair. ill keep you guys posted.

I sold my 96 Polaris Indy 600 last year for $1800. I miss that thing but I have not been getting lots of snow in my area and nobody I knew had a sled so I sold it. That was the fastest machine I have ever owned. I could pin the 120mph speedo on long runs and raced a friend in a mustang who said I broke a hundred alongside the road.
