Hey guys, I'm perfectly familiar with tire nomenclature on bikes and cars, but can't figure out what's the deal with ATV numbers.

Typical numbers: front: 26x8x12, rear: 26x10x12.

Need to know if all numbers are in inches, and which ones refer to the wheel and which ones to the tire. I assume the middle numbers are for tire or wheel width, and the last ones probably rim size? But how about the 26"?

Thanks man. So tires usually have the same diameter (profile), regardless of width, huh? Interesting. Hey, you have a polaris, so I assume your tires are the same as mine will (polaris tires), right?

What's the wheel width front and back, do you know?

One more question: where I live we have a ton of those 'toritos' (don't know their 'technical' names), which have very sharp thorns in all directions (come off tumbleweeds, I think); can those puncture our radial tires? Hope not man, otherwise my quad will be useless to me.

I'm not sure which atv you have but mine is a 03 700 and came with 25x10x12 on the rear and 25x8x12 on the front and they were Rawhides. I now have Gators 27x12x12 on the rear and 27x10x12 on the front. The radials have a little softer sidewall for a better ride but can punture alittle easier. I think my wheels are 12x6 front 12x8 rear. You can buy alot of different size atv tires.

 

What model do you have? The stock rim and tire info should be in your manuel. If you are worried about Punctures, get 6-ply tires and put some goop in'um.

 

Still don't have it buddy, but will be the Sportsman 800 EFI. Still debating if I should take the one on the floor with 2 hours and 10 miles, I think, plus with shifting problems (looks brand new, by the way), or order one with zero miles.

Are those 'polaris' tires good? Hope I don't have to spring for tires right off the bat. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif[/img] They're radials, which should resist punctures better, aren't they?

 

Shifting problems? Look on denniskirk.com. They will have a whole s$$t load of tires. Think of it as a index. 'round here we need tires for woods and mud. Never been to T, but its like hard desert or messa right? Most stock tires on utility quads are average. Just burn the stock ones off and than you'll have no choice but to upgrade[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif[/img]

 

Yep, the thing refused to shift unless you tap the throttle while putting pressure on the lever. It 'clanked' into gear; not good, me thinks.
Supposedly gets better with use, according to some posts I read here, but shouldn't do it, does it?

Thanks for the info on the tires. And yes, this is desert country man. Later on I'll learn how big of a tire I can put on the stock aluminum wheels of the 800, which I like, by the way.

will it shift with the engine off? you have to press the foot brake to shift into H or P.

 

Didn't try the engine-off trick, but thanks for the tip.
The problem I had was from 'L' to 'H'.
And yes, I was pressing the pedal, but may I ask you if that's just a factory suggestion for safety reasons, or does the quad acutally has a solenoid that prevents the lever to move, like on cars? Dealer said there's nothing electric or electronic acting on the lever, so that shouldn't matter. On the other hand, I don't believe this dealer too much, so experts please pitch in.
