LT80 Starter Motor
#1
When trying to start the Lt80 the starter motor just wines as though it is tunring but not engaging with the engine. I charged the battery and still no go so decided to take the starter motor off the bike and have a look at it. It is loose but I cannot work out how to remove it from the frame, its very tight!
Anyone know how to remove the starter from the frame and also what may be wrong with it?
Is there any other way of starting the LT80 without using the starter motor?

You must remove the bolt that holds the motor in and raise the motor up to get it out. It is a tight fit. I don't get into the insides of the starter,so I cannot advise what may be wrong. I know there are other threads about strarters they may explain.
Suzuki makes a pull start for it. They work well.

you can get a new starter on e-bay for 99.00 to 120.00 depeding on who you buy from...I just bought one from db electrical rebuilders off e-bay. www.dbelectrical.com....was like 110.00 shipped

the pull starter hits a gear on the front of the clutch assembly, and the electric start hits on the gear at the rear of the clutch assembly....mine has both electric, and pull....though i am looking for a new gear that the pull start hits because mine is missing teeth. i would like to find a new pull start too, because mine "exploded" and is why my gear is bad, though i could rebuild my pull started if need be....new pull starter from my local dealer is 91.00 new.

yes, you can have both electric and pull start. also, I had to remove carb and engine mount bolt to get starter out. stuff rag in carb hole so no crud falls in.I stood the LT80 on end when trying to do removal. used a pry bar to keep engine outta the way, then jiggled the starter around until it came out.
I was able to buy a new brush plate from Suzuki, and mine worked fine after that. i noticed one of the brush springs was broken, so there was no longer any spring tension pushing the brush against the armature. you can also just get brushes only (it's a Matsushi_a starter motor. put a "T" in my blank space, the censor won't let me post and spell that word). brushes are the cheapest way to go, and that's most likely what has worn out.

Ok, removed that engine bolt and the starter just dropped out no problem. The quad has been used in deep water and when I opened it up everything was loosely ceased! I oiled it all up and everything moved freely now. I will refit in the next day or so and see how it goes. Thanks for all the help and advice which is much appreciated.
