Default 2001 sportman 500 ho starter problem?

My dads sportman's started recently quit working. When he hit the button, it tries to turn over, but nothing catches. Any suggestions as to fixing this would be helpful.

Thanks,

Ryan

This may sound confusing but I've seen them replaced at my dealer a few times. There is a gear thingy that engages the flywheel it is pretty easy to replace but the part is about 100 bucks I think. If you take it out hold both ends and turn it , it should move freely. Sorry I can't be more detailed but if the starter is turning this is your problem. Maybe someone can else can better expain this.

try whacking the starter housing with a plastic hammer or screwdriver handle a couple times

you might want to remove the starter and clean/lube the moving parts

My starter would stick and just spin until I beat it with somthing, after it sat for a few days without being started. I took the pull-starter housing off and looked to see what I could see and found lots of rust and little bitty sping bits. I took the bendix (gear) out and spend lots of WD40 cleaning it out (if I were doing it again I would drop it in an ulrta sonic cleaner). I also put a bit of grease in it untill it was engaging like it should. I have a good machanical mind, but for the most part, I had no idea what I was doing :-) You will also want to pick up a new gasket for the pull-starter cover.
