No Spark -Xplorer 400 Sparks with recoil only
#1
Machine sparks when recoil is used. Electric start - no spark until key switch is turned off then 1 spark is produced. Put battery charger on -Start mode 55amp and will start/spark everytime..
Will then start until the battery loses some voltage.. will not spark with a steady 12.8 volts...
Big thing is starts with recoil, not the button .. anyone ????????????

I swapped out batterys from another unit. Still NG.
It will drop to a low low of 11.5 v's as its cranking....
As it is cranking Via the button, 1 small tug at the recoil and it fires.
It sounds as if its cranking fast enough to generate a charge from the stator.
Starter maybe not spinning fast enough to produce a charge from the stator ?
I have fooled with 80 cc MX bikes that I could almost generate spark for spinning the rotor by hand..
Hmmmmmm the starter my in fact not be spinning properly..
Someone else had mentioned something in a post regarding no spark and the person posed a question-- if it sparked with using the recoil with no other follow up.. Got me wondering how to contact that member but I can't see how to contact them directly from here..

Try jumping past the starter reley it could be bad but it sounds more like you may have 2 bad battrys.

Answer found...........
Pulled Mag. Let starter spin .. Perfect and quite fast/torquey.
Removed pick up coil and sanded clean as I did to the Stator pick ups..
Cleaned small "chips" from between each magnet on the inside of the Mag.
Sanded smooth the pick up "flange" on the outside of the Mag.
pushed pick up coil as close as possible with the min tolerance avail from mount holes.
Fires every time regardless of recoil or Elec start.
Thanks all .. Hope this may be of use to other Polaris 2 smoke owners

The stator is starting to fail. I bet if you checked the resistance values of the stator one of the readings would be to the etreme of the range or even outside the range. I would bet the ground on the stator plate is nearly burnt or broke off. The load on the starter doesn't allow the bad ground to allow it to spark, but as soon as you let off the starter button the ground becomes good enough to spark again.

My buddy had the same thing happen to his Xplorer and it was a broken wire. Check the harness that runs down the left side of the motor. It had actually chafed where it rubs near where the jug meets the case.
