The 500 has lots of power and very solid. The 400 on the other hand can be built to produce 90+ hP. The 400's make the best drag bikes around. So either way you have power.

2 totally different beasts. The 500 is an incredible tourqe monster, and is usually modded for bottom end power. As 2many said, the 400 is modded for mid- to top-end power, sometimes creating up to 90+ HP. Depending on what you want to use it for, each has its own charactrisics.

The scrambler 400 and 500 Produce the same speed stock. In 1997 california started laying in on the 2 strokes. So polaris turned to the drawing boards to design a 4 stoke. The first year for the 500 was terrible. The 400 smoked everytime by a long shot so sales weren't to good. So polaris went back and re-desighned the 500 calling it the 500 h.o. or high out-put . After this the 400 and 500 were now dead even. In my opinion though a 2-stroker is much better. It can be modified to produce About 110 hp by mad engineering inc. or AEE performance. Hey but that is just my opinion. I own a 1996 polaris scrambler 400 4X4 and it hauls @$$. I put in v force reed valves, k&n filter, DG type III racing exhaust, ngk racing ignition, piston/sleave bored .020 over, clutch kit, mikuni carb, fuel optimizer, customized the airbox, and upgraded the suspension. Yeah she might weigh about 600 lbs, but once she gets rollin' ther's no stoppin' her!
