Help!!!
I am new to Polaris.
Im looking at a 2000 Sportsman 500 4x4 Yellow. It does not say HO on it so I guess its not. It is in very good shape.
The price is $3500. It has a simple hand controled plow on it.
Is a 2000 a good year? or will I have trouble?
Im selling my 97 Wolverine to get this.

The tires are not good. Other than that its in very good condition but not in new condition.
Im in Nj and the price seems pretty good.
I could use some more thoughts on it.

My 2000 sp 500 is very reliable. I have around 2500 miles on it and It hasnt needed any major work besides fixing a few torn boots. I run it through the summer and plow with it in the winter no issues with it yet.

I checked NADA. Low is $2800. High is $3600. Where I live in Upstate NY, For a bike to be worth retail, it should need no repairs, including tires, and be dealer serviced. Generaly the dealers sell those older bikes for conciderably less than retail. But if there is a sellers market in your area then just go with your best deal. I think you will like that bike. I have a 2001 500ho and I love it. I bought it two years ago and only paid $3900 back then for it at Parkway Polaris. Good Luck

I bought a 2002 Sportsman 500 HO new I gave $6400 for it, I dont know if that makes you feel any better but I have no complants about it. I LOVE IT! As much power it has for my needs I still like to have a little more power to really show my Artic Cat buddies what they are REALLY missing.

sounds like a fair deal with plow and as long as it doesn't have a boatload of miles on it...
my last machine was a 2001 500....not the HO, was a great machine, had zero problems with it....

I got a 2000 Yellow 500 Sportsman last year for $3600, it had a winch and no plow. Tires in great shape.
I would pick this one up if I were you, but you may need to know a few things first:
2000 500 Sportsman had problems with the cams exhaust lob, it likes to wear and this can cause the engine to not run at full throttle very well. From what I understand a new HO cam can be installed in the non HO engine, almost no difference, but the cost of the cam alone is $189, so this is a cost that you may forsee in the future. So if you can find a 500 HO for a bit more . . .
The HO is a much stronger more roboust engine, it only takes one ride to want the little more it has.
I would see if you they will let you remove the clutch cover and look at the belt. Check the frame for bends and odd welds. Look at the condition of the radiator. Check the 4x4 and the speed sensor, make sure both work as they should. Battery and starter have also been areas of concern for me.
Worn tires, are just a good excuse to replace them with something better :-)

seems a little steep. in 2000, brand new, i bought one for $5250. it included the free Warn2000 winch to. having a winch is a real plus if you are going to do any type of real atving.

I think its a little steep also. If you could have bought a new one in 2000 for $5300. I would say between $2500 and $2800. If the price is $3500 you can buy a new one now for about $6500. Only $3000 more and you have a 5 year newer (Brand New) quad with no miles. and you know how everything abouit it with warranty.
