I was out riding around on the ice a few days ago and I feel through. I was lucky it was only around 3-4 feet of water and my Sp 500 didnt get totally sunk but I did get alot of water in it. The airbox was full of water and there was a little water in the oil but I draned out everything and changed all the oil and it runs now. Any of you have any similar experiances?

Well I havent had problems with the ice due to I live in the south. I guess you know how lucky it wasn't deeper than that, but I have got into water over the bars before. I can only recommend not to try to start it untill ALL of the fluids have been drained and refilled before you try to start it ,plus 2 to 3 cans of WD-40 and give it a good bath. Should be ready to go but I would do short rides with a buddy fist time back out.

Change the oil a few times to be sure you get all the water out

I've busted through ice before, did it about a month ago, but luckily only about 3 feet deep and mud, etc....hit the gas hard, was already in 4wd, so i pulled out quick...

I did sink a snowmobile in about 5 feet of water, two of us on the sled, soaking wet, in the middle of a lake, got the machine out and ran for the shore, hit a tavern and mades some calls to come get us to change our clothes..... Had a friend die two winters ago, fell through Green Bay....the actual bay, he went back to get one guy that fell through, got him out....the two started riding for the shore which was a long way away....the both went in and died...

ice isn't something to mess around with, don't drive on it unless it is thick...

thankfully i've never had a horrible experience with ice. but the danger is real in my area with the crazy warm then cold weather we have. seems to change by the week! (having a cold spell right now)

a couple decades ago my brother fell through the ice near shore. thank God it was only 2.5-3' deep. i helped pull him out. a quick change of clothes in the camp and a couple hours inside by the heater and he was ok.

but that quick dunk sure made him cold!

when in doubt, stay off the ice!

If you are gonna drive on the Ice do yourself a favor and wear a a survival suit (floater) mine is good for -60 or -70 and I will tell you it is worth every penny I paid for it and I got it in a color to match my bike.
It has saved my life a couple of times. Actually my daughter got it for me as a christmas present one year (with my money) but she said that is what she wanted to get for me. The quad is replaceable but do not take yourself away from your family early in life.

I have sunk my wheeler a few times ( never in the winter ) and had the entire wheeler under water. I change the spark plug. Drain the diff's and refill them. Clean and re oil my air filter . Add some Heet water eliminator to my fuel. Check all my electrical contacts out ( just a quick once over ) . I oil my winch cable and add some di-electric grease to the electrical contacts on the winch. And the most important thing I do is to change my oil filter and flush the oil with low grade inexpensive oil , until there is no sign of contamination. Once I am sure there is no water in the oil I change the filter again and fill the wheeler up with the proper ( expensive ) oil. The last thing I do is spray down all the moving parts and cables with CLP. This costs a little money to do...but the price of two filters a spark plug , and some oil is worth the piece of mind knowing that my wheeler is OK.

I hope this is of some use.

What's the deal with riding on the ice like that on a 700 pound machine? Are you buckin' for a "Darwin Award" or what?
