I am considering upgrading the old 97 400L Sportsman to a new 500 HO. Over the years I have had to use my backup recoil to get my machine started. What do you guys do with the larger quads if your starter or battery goes south? I would hate to be hunting here in Alaska 30 miles back in the mountains and find my machine has a bad battery. Is there any other backup way of starting them? Or do you have to take a spare battery just incase?

Jumper cables. But if youre riding alone...youre stuck.

Never thought about it, but you could strap on a jump box and it would give you extra power if you needed it also. You can get one at any parts store for about $40 and just keep it charged up. Its good for other uses also.

i agree, a portable jumper kit would be best to take with you, or you could just go with the 500, it's a great machine. btw, never have had any problems with my 700 battery, but i'm not 30 miles in the middle of nowhere either.

The jumper box is a darn good idea.

That sould provide plenty of power for an ATV. Maybe I will re-think my decision on getting a 500, and go with an EFI 7 or 8.

Thanks

Realistically, You should never ride alone. Just never know what will happen. If you do then don't try anything off the wall and be extra careful. Those quads are very heavy. Even though I'm only 120 lbs. I want an artic cat 650 so bad.

BAlaska I know were your comeing from.Ive had my 02 sp700 up to alaska a few times. In the summer time I work a few gold claims up on the yukon river in the circle mining district.I always carry an extra battery with me.If you know that part of the state youll know theres not much of a chance of walking out.Lots of them grizzly bears up there.Ive even tryed to call polaris and see if I could buy a recoil like the ones they put on the 700mv no luck yet.

Rule #1: Never ride alone.

Knowing that I'll live by rule #1, I'd say, jump it, charge it, or tow it!

The problem is, no one I know around here has a quad to ride with.
So, I really just use my machine to plow with in the winter and rarely leave the property with it. I was just thinking about my future upgrade and its pros and cons. When I get my new one, I am sure my friends will have saved up enough to get one as well.
