Default Scrambler 500 mods? Worth the time?

Hi there, ive been interested in getting a scrambler 500 4x4 for myself. I race 250r's and banshee's locally when i get a chance but wanted to get something to ride with my buddies on the weekend to rip through the woods and dig into some mud. My quads are great but just lookin for something different right now to ride in the trails. We tend to do a ton of tight trails with lots of hills and a ton of rocks which is why i wouldnt mind having one nice and quick 4x4. Anyways, i hear that you can really mod these scramblers up and get some amazing power. My one buddy had one of these before and i vaguely remember that it wasnt half bad, needed more quickness and punch but it was completely stock. Anyways, is it worth putting the time into one of these to get some serious power out of it or what? I really dont want to go with the 400, i have enough two strokes right now. What would you recommend and how much do you figure? I was looking at the hot seat site and the hpd site but not sure on which i'd want to go with. If im going to put some money into this, i want it to go like heck! any help is appreciated.

I'll let BBS handle this!

But here's my suggestion, talk to Rick Ritter (www.rittercycle.com). Tell him how/where you're going to ride and he'll tell you what to do. He carries HPD too (which I suggest). I think you're looking at about $550 if you want to wake that thing up fairly good.

There isnt alot you can do to a 500HO motor it is about maxed out from the factory. But you can pipe it and get a better airflow with a K&N type filter and an airbox mod.Where the power is really hidden at is in the clutching you can make the 500 do almost anything by changing the clutch set up to the way you ride.I like a low engagment speed with a fast shiftrate and a super fast back shift. With the setup I run you loose a little on the topend but it is great in tight trails and hills.BBS runs a differant setup he can tell you about his.Check my sig for how mine is set up.I did all mods except the wheels for less than $600.

The scrambler is one of the fastest 4x4's out there. Awsome machine for the trails that you described. You wont see anywhere near the gains on the 500 than you would on the 400 when you start to mod it. Four Stroke Tech has a 600cc and 628cc big bore kits that will turn it into an animal, if that is what you want. Other than that, dont expect a WHOLE lot out of just a pipe and filter

Thanks for the replies so far. Basically what i was thinking about is putting on a pipe, a clutch kit, k&n air filter, etc. I dont mind putting some money into it because if it works out alright, ill be able to use it to ride with my buddies. I definetely want a strong response with it, a quick get up and go. The big bores really dont mean a whole lot to me unless the reliability stays very much the same, i want to keep the bike as reliable as possible. Tell me what you think and ill definetely be looking into it! ill check out mickey's website as well. Which clutch kit would be best? I'd like to keep a fairly healthy top end on it, yet getting some really strong pull with the bike. The reason why i dont want to get a 400 is simply because i have a lot of two strokes and i dont feel like rebuilding another one every year. Ive always liked the scrambler but i was a little leary on the automatic, but i am betting i could get used to it. I ride with a lot of R's, raptors, and 450r's so i wanna be every bit able to keep up and roost along with em. Im sure with the right mods on the scrambler i can do that, just need to get the right ones!

Pipe and clutch kit helps a lot. You can also get the 628 FST kit.

The clutch kits are going to get you the most response. The pipes and filters just don't wake this machine up too much. Mickey does not have a web site. Just search FST(FourStrokeTech) on these boards and you should come up with a number for him. Claims his big bore kit is very reliable. (it's a big bore and stroker kit) I only no of one person with the kit. He's had it over a year with no problems. He says it's awsome. If I had the money I'd give it a shot.
