Default Wiring a 12V socket

Hey all,
I have been lurking for a while, and now I have a question. I just got my wife a Trailboss 330 (great quad for her), and she wants to put her GPS unit on it (I guess she thinks I get lost too much). What I'm wondering is, how hard is it to get a cigarette lighter socket, and hard wire it into the 12 volt system on the quad, and then run the gps unit off that? Any help would be appreciated.
Jason

Wouldnt be that hard at all. Just find one of the red wires that runs to the ignition that is hot at all times. Splice into that and find a good ground. The hardest part would probably be mounting it

I dont know about your trailboss, but my xplorer's have two leads under the hood with caps on them for a 12v accessory outlet if you add one. Very easy to find, if i remember correctly

go to an auto place like autozone, they sell the cigarette lighter sockets ready to wire. just hook up a red power wire and a black ground wire, you can go to the battery or go to an ignition feed and a chassis ground.

If you have a service manual, it will show where a 12v socket should go in the schematic, if you don't, just pick a spot. Make sure you put it in the right spot if you want it switched (off when the key is off). Attaching it directly to the battery would let you run something off of the outlet with the key off, which you may or may not want. A fuse may also be a good idea.

Thanks for all the help guys. I have a service manual on the way. I guess i can just ask her how she wants it and where, then get brave and cut a hole in the pretty new plastic. Again thanks for the help

If you are going to run directly to the battery, the put a fuse on the positive lead, just in case. You can pick up a lighter plug at walmart back in the automotive section...

If you need a temporary solution, you can use one of these. I use one because I am not just limited to using it on one atv, I can use it on any ATV or car. Also useful with a male-to-male cigarette lighter cord to charge the quad's battery off of another quad or car, like those portable 12v jumpstarter batteries. Only problem is that it does not have a built-in fuse unless you use one of these.

Tyler711 -- I have an '01 Xplorer. I haven't looked to see if I had the two leads nor have I checked my service manual yet but do you need to buy a certain outlet to work with those leads? I would like to add an outlet to my Xplorer so I would appreciate any insight you could give.

Thanks.

Don't quote on this, when i put on the handgrips it was the first time I had ever done anything to my quad, and it was a few years ago, so my memory may be lying, but i believe the connector under the hood was a positive polarity "quick connect", the female connector shown here. I think that for negative you just ground it right? There was no negative lead. If i were you I'd look under that hood to make sure there is one, I'd do it but my 250 is at camp. I am 90% sure though.

Anyone ever try one of polaris's ATV Reverse Warnings? It seems like a good idea, with so many kids in my family, and it doubles as a horn. But it also looks like you could get the parts for 15 bux at radioshack. My snowmobile came with one, and it works really well letting you know you are in reverse, something i could forget easily otherwise. Any insight?
