overall the 500's a really good reliable machine. keep the normal maintenance up, radiator fins cleaned after muddin, check cv boots regularly and replace if needed, you know just the everyday basics. use low range when needed - extended low speed, pulling or hauling heavy loads, slow over really rough stuff- it'll help keep the belt in good shape. check through the posts and you'll find other stuff too. if he didn't get the owners manual, he may want to so he can go through it for general things. also, one more thing, since he bought it used he can re-register it with polaris. doesn't cost him anything and if ever needed will be notified of recalls or safety bulletins. this will need to be done through a dealer.

In all honesty the 500 is probably the most reliable machine Polaris has ever made, there isn't many problems with them if any. just the typical noises and such.
