How to Adjust Honda 400EX chain
#1
HI guys,
Just bought a 02 400EX,need to adjust the chain,to loose. Have no owners manual to see how its done. Can you guys tell me how to do it,looks to me like you do something with the 4 allen bolts on the swingarm, but not sure of the correct process.

loosen the (4) allen bolts at the rear of the carrier assembly. Grab a large screwdriver (sloted) and insert into the concentric adjusting assembly (directly to the right of the drive sprocket) and slowly turn the concentric assembly clockwise. Your chain will tighten as you move this concentric assembly. Once your chain is tight, re-tighten the (4) allen bolts.
Don't forget that your chain should be adjusted tight with your body weight on the machine.

Congratualtions on your new ride! I hope it treats you as well as mine has.
To adjust your chain properly, loosen the four allen head bolts on the carrier and rotate clockwise to tighten it as previous posts have indicated. But, make sure to leave the recommended slack in the chain as your owners manual indicates(I don't remember off the top of my head now what that is). I think there might even be a sticker somewhere showing this. This amount of slack will allow the suspension to travel thru the full amount of travel without breaking your chain. If you were to adjust it, so its tight with your body weight, it will fail. Maybe not immeadiately, but eventually it will.
Good luck.

Thanks, I always adj. my previous quad chains with me off of it so that the shocks are extended. I ordered a new manual. Just wanted to adj the chain sooner than later.
So there is an adjuster somewhere near the front drive sprocket on the motor somewhere I have to turn ?

Thanks guys for the help, man that was super easy. Also thanks for the screw driver ,and roll the quad back tip, worked awesome. It took a very small amount of moving that collar to tighten the chain.
