i don't think the warming up has any thing to do with it ,but, i would adjust your shift linkage you must do both low inside and high/reverse outside i plow with my 6x6 sportsman 500 alot shifting front back front back all the time i have to adjust once and awhile not saying this is your problem may be worth checking good luck!!

If you follow the shifter down to its base, you will see a black box that it connects to.
Off the back of that box, there are 2 rods. There are tie rods on both ends of both rods.
To adjust, simply take 2 (10mm I think) wrenches and crack the locking nut free on the rod on both sides.
Then use a pair of pliars and spin the center rod section until it is at a point where everything engages nicely. Then tighten the nuts back up.
You may also have a problem inside the shifter box itself. on my 99 300, I had a peg break off the ball on the bottom of the shifter which gave the shift handle itself way too much play and it didn't like to shift so well.
More than likely however... your problem is just in the linkage.
