Default Odometer reading Kawasaki and Yamaha way off

Went on a trip 2 Grizzlies (2005-2004 unit) and a Prairie and BF (2005-2004 unit)s. everyone reset there odometers at beginning of trip. At one point we all compared miles went. Both grizz's had 94 miles and both Kawasaki’s had exactly 84 miles. The two gps units that were on during the whole trip read 78 and 79 miles. So 10 miles in plus column for Grizzly makes speedometer also faster but by how much?
That sounds like a lot , no wonder these Yamaha guys claim speeds that are not close to true. Does anyone know how much faster the Yamaha speedometer is.

By the way there was no comparison in machines with the Prairie it just flat blew the wheels off the grizz.

Were the Grizzlies modded at all ? Ive had the p650 and now I have a griz they were both real close in stock form. If the p700 you are talking about is the one in your profile, I would hope it would beat the Griz. It should beat the griz even in stock form. Im not being a smart A#^. But thats nothing new, My speedo on the griz and the p650 read the same when they both had 26' tires on them. Im not saying that you are wrong this is just my experience. I have gone on rides with my Griz and other quads and have noticed that my miles are a couple more ,but not by that margin. I always attributed that to going through the puddles a couple more times than the others.

I think Dirt Wheels once noted that the Grizzly's speedo shows like 6mph faster. Yes it is way off! I put 27's on mine and now its dead on. I guess the engineers at Yamaha were thinking people would go to bigger tires right away. Would be smart if they were thinking that, at least for people like me.

It is my expirience that every Prairie Sppedo I've tested is off... I wouldn't be suprised if the Grizz's are the same... these were all tested with stock tires, against a GPS... It also wouldn't suprise me if it was done on purpose from the factory, solely for the purpose of making us think we can go faster than we really are ???

My speedo is fast by about 3mph at 62 according to the GPS. But accuracy of GPS is only 20ft at that time.

The only way to compare a GPS to a mechanical speedo is in a straight line from point a to b, the GPS unit while accurate can give false reading by turning in a woods. I have experimented with this myself, in a straight my Kawi is fast by 5 miles per hundred but twisting and turning thru the woods gives really eraddict readings on the GPS as far as actual distance covered. The GPS is far more precise as the crow flies so to speak.

That's good to know, especially in the battery save mode when the gps is not taking as many readings per minute. Is the 5% figure as the crow flies?
