I tore into the task of replacing the brushes on my starter and found oil in the starter. Is this normal?? I have never seen this before. I opened the drain plug on the starter and nothing came out. I also open the drain plug that is right below the starter pinion gear and only get a couple drips. I can only assume that there is a seal leaking in the starter. Please help!!! This is the first starter that I have worked on.

Was there oil in the recoil or flywheel area? Because this is the only place it can come from. If so you you will have to replace the seal that is behind the stater.

There wasnt that much I would expect more than just enough oil to be "wet". Will it hurt anything to run the starter the way it is for the weekend?? I planned on just making sure there was oil for the flywheel/recoil casing and tearing it back down next week.
