Default Lift kit question - Sportsman 500

My buddy has a 2004 Camo Sportsman 500....... He can buy a used set of rims with 27" Blackwaters mounted on them cheap right now... I know the rears will fit fine but will he need a liftkit for the front?... How about putting some 1 1/2 inch spacers under the springs...... Anyone done this on their quad with success ? ... I know that he will need to re-clutch after ... What's everyone running with those tires on the 500 ?...... Thanks in advance

Default Lift kit question - Sportsman 500

I ran 27" on my '00 500 magnum with a primary spring out of a '94 400L.
Used washers on the front to lift it like you mentioned. Made a shock extention on the rear.
Worked great. Did'nt like a stall spring in ft clutch. Put a lt blue spring in rear clutch to keep it from up shifting so quick.

Most set ups I've seen (and used) are in the 1" to 2" lift range. This is usually accomplished with spacers placed under the front coils. Personally, on my 04.5 SP500HO, I run a 2" front spacer lift and stock springs with 27" 589's with great results. This provides plenty on clearance for the tires and enough preload to firm things up a bit out front. This also "levels" the bike out for a "better" look.

As far as wheels, unless your buddy has or is getting aftermarket wheels with more offset, you'll need to look into some wheel spacers to avoid contact (rubbing) with the tie rod ends.

So far, I have not felt the need for clutching mods. Even with the oversized tires, power still comes on right off idle and top end has remained unchanged. Others may have had different results in this department, but it all boils down to riding style and what's important for you.

Good luck with your project...
