Default 400ex rear brakes

Yea I just changed the rear pads on my 400ex and when I was finished I noticed a thin piece of metal covering about half of the old pad on the piston side. Is this piece essential. Thanks!

If you get a squealing vibration sound, thats what that plate is supposed to prevent. I don't have them on mine and they work fine.
