Top speed on a sportsman 500 h.o.?
#2
One of the guys I know bought a 2004 or 2004.5, whichever, sportsman 500 ho and got me to radar it on pavement. The first run he hit 56 mph and his speedo was showing over 60 mph. He was kinda ticked off so he did it again. Same thing, 56 mph. He continued to do this 4 - 5 times and every time he hit the same top speed of 56 mph and the speedo always read low to mid sixties.

You both are correct. The new 500's have less top speed, but more bottome end power. Since my machine is a 2002, it will top out at 60mph. I am almost positive the 04's and up have a different helix resulting in less top speed. Personally, I would rather have a little more torque since most of my riding is done at 30mph or less.

My stock 04 SP400 will top out at about 52/53 according to the speedometer on dead flat ground.
I personally think top speed is of little importance........in the trails I can keep up with the big bores.......and they can't lose me. With that said........more torque and acceleration is always more fun.
