Check to see if you shift button contacts are clean, if not that may be your problem.

I had the same problem and there is a thread in here somewhere describing the problem, and solution. You have a faulty angle sensor. I have heard that Honda had a problem with the supplier and has since switched. I replaced mine, even though it would have been a warranty item, just so I wouldn't lose my machine for however long they needed to keep it. It is very easy to change; at the lower front of the engine, you will notice a round cylinder and below that a rectangular cover that protects the sensor. Two bolts for the cover and two for the sensor. Unplug the old sensor and plug in the new. $35 and 20 minutes. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Oh and BTW, the other thread has the blink sequence error codes. Yours should be three. Have you checked your machine for the recall notice on the front tie rod ends?

Dude, I bought my 04 Rancher ES in October and last week , I had the same problem, I called the dealer and was told it was the angle sensor and that it is becoming a common problem with the ES, easy fix, replace it $42.00. Other than that no problem and I ride it very hard
