winch qusetion

Also searched this but no results, Do i need to install an in line fuse connection at the battery for my winch?. I just went with a cheap one from costco to try it out. Also what does a solonoid do in this application. I see other brands come with one . I am not sure if mine has one built in or not. Thanks,

My ramsey winch came with the solenoid. The solenoid is used in the wiring set-up in this case for two reasons. There is no need for a inline fuse since the solenoid breaks the current and also the solenoid is used to reverse the current to the winch for in or out directions. Now the actual switch on the handlebar does have a inline fuse in it. I have seen many wired without the solenoid. In some cases like on an automobile it not only works as a break in the current to the starter, but can actually increase the current to the starter. Just my two cents for what ever its worth. I surely dont know it all and am learning new things every day as well. I just dont mind sharing what I have learned. I mechanic on autos for a living and build custom bikes on the side as a hobby. I have always said, when I quit learning new things, its time to quit! ha ha.
