I did a few searches and only came up with a few calculators that were not complete enough for my needs. I am pretty sure I have seen one around here that had where you can adjust tire size, sprockets and then it also showed you the ratio of each gear.

What I am trying to do is to find out what gear I should be running for little sahara and st.anthonies. Last trip (only to LS) I could get up about 1/3 of the face in 3rd, but then had to drop to 2nd with 14 tooth and 22 inch sand stars. I now have 14-17 teeth sprockets, and was wondering if I put the 17 on with the 22's if that would make the gearing in second would be faster than 3rd (with the 14-22 combo)

I just want to get up the hill as fast as I can, but dont know if running 17-22 will suck for everything else?

 

A 17 and 22 sandstars will give you no grunt. It will be geared way to tall.

 

I know, but I am wondering if this will be optimum gearing for the hill. I get tired of having yfz's fly past me because the riders are 100 lbs lighter, and the quad is 200 lbs lighter. (they pull 3rd no problem)

 

15/40 with 20" sand stars. my jetting was just a tad fat. Pulled choke cherry at the rev limiter in second. At the time I had a 46HV and endcap. I really believe I could of pulled my 22's at the rev limiter with 15/40 with just the end cap and carb.

isnt 15/42 with 22 inch rears nearly the same as 14/40 with 22 rears?

 

some say but that extra pound you save in rotating mass on the rear sprocket seems to make a difference. it was also told to me once that it's easier for the engine to turn the larger counter shaft sprocket. i've had both diffently perfer the 15-42.

 

Click on the do it yourself link in my sig. There is a gearing calculator that give you all that and more. With that said....you'll need to take extra sprokets with you. The reason being your quad may need a diff gearing setup then someone elses. They can get you in the ball bark, but the only way your gonna know is trial and error unfortunatly.

 

I had to use a 1/2" impact driver to get the sprocket nut off. If your going to carry more then one sprocket make sure you have the tools to be able to remove the nut! and remember to bring the socket...its a biggie!

 

lol ya I have changed gearing many times in the past. We also built a V-nose onto the trailor, so we keep the generator and air compressor up there, then the impact is in the back [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img] (I bought the impact sizes we needed awhile ago so we can all change them on the go)

I think im just going to end up with the 14 front on again hoping for the best lol.
