Help! - Knocking sound in reverse
#1
Hey everyone,
I have a 2004 Polairs Sportsman 500 and I just got back from a weekend full of muddin and trail riding. While riding, I notices a knocking sound when I went in reverse in both 2wd and 4wd. I was hoping it was a rock or something caught up in the drive terrain, but when I cleaned it up it still made the same noise. The knock sounds like something is in a bind and then it frees itself and steadily repeats. It nevers makes the noise while going forward, only in reverse. I have no idea what it could be. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

How do the CV joint covers look? Any tears or rips? Just from what you described, I would think it could be a CV joint issue.

Yes there is a tear in the CV joint boot. Now that you mention it, that sound would only make sense from a cv joint. Thanks for the reply...... I hope they don't cost too much........

Had the same thing happen with my 96 425, it is the silent chain thats stretched, if not repaired it will take out the gears and maybey break the case.. I put new chain and seals in mine for 80.00 pretty big job to pull trans ect. took me probably6 or 7 hours but well worth it.
