Grizzly carb probs
#1
My buddy has a 04 Grizz, and twice now the carb has gone crappy and needed to be cleaned. The dealer told him he had to run premium because the ethanol in regular and super makes the rubber needle shim expand, causing probs after sitting for a week or two. When asked about other Grizzlies having the same problem, he said other people have different needle shims. They claim that he can park it for more than two weeks only if it has premium.
Is this a bunch of crap? Or is it actually true?
Yes, I know the obvious answer here are:
Why let it sit for two weeks?
Why not ride it every day?
etc. etc.

Horsecrap!
I've run 87, 89, and 91 in mine since I got it July 2001. Never had any problems at all with the carb. Probably ran more 87 octane in it than anything else, because its cheaper. I've let it sit for at least 2 months this winter without even starting it, and probably have done that before in the past, and never had any problem. It shouldn't make that kind of a difference. My old Honda has sat for extremely long periods of time with the same cheap gas in it, and never had any problem with the carb messing up.
and your last question is common for me. With my schedule, I can't ride mine every week either. Not everyone has the time to take it out every saturday.

Thanks for the replies guys, I kinda thought that their explanation was a bunch of crap when he told me. Any suggestions on the best way to address this with a dealer? The fact that they told him that in the first place makes me think that they won't be very receptive to someone challenging their diagnosis.

try putting in an inline fuel filter they are like three bucks and they save alot of problems. especially if you use jerry cans to fill your tank. they ALWAYS have a little dirt in them
hope this helps

I know in a few of my owners manuals, it states its ok to use ethenol gas, but you need to use it up, and not let it sit for very long in the carb float bowl.
Its kind of hard to find pure gas in MN, but thats probably the best fix. If youre gonna use ethenol, then when youre done riding for the day, turn the gas to off, and either let the motor run until it dies, or drain the float bowl, with the screw on the bottom of the carb. It takes about a minute to run it dry...so i usually turn the gas to off, about a minute before i stop and park it.
The problem of deposits in the carb, are due to the gas being left on, and the gas evaporates, though the vent hole in the carb, and because the gas valve is on, it continously refills, and dries. This condensing is what leaves deposits. If the valve is off, and the float bowl is dry, there wont be any deposits.
Regular or premium , doesnt matter. But try to find only pure gas, for the quad.
